My Full Story

How I went from skeptic to intuitive Reiki practitioner.

Choosing Vulnerability Over Fear

I'll be honest — putting myself out there like this has been incredibly hard. You don't just open up in your fifties and do not have to explain why listening to the voices in your head is okay. For years, fear held me back — fear of criticism, opinions, and skepticism. But through the support of my husband, my closest friends, lighthouse teachers and those no-doubt moments, here I am today.

Where It Started

My first experience was with dreams, for as long as I can remember, and that seemed normal enough. It went deeper as a teen, when my mom was fighting cancer in a town about 130 miles away. One night she came to me in a dream and told me it was time for her to go. She sat with me, real as real, and prepared me. She wanted me to know she'd always be with me, whenever I needed her.

When I woke up, I knew. I went to school that morning, but I couldn't shake the feeling — I needed to tell someone, anyone. Everyone around me was caught up in their own morning conversations, and I just blurted it out: "My mom died." A friend told me that wasn't something to joke about, since as far as she knew, no one had told me anything yet. A few minutes later, I saw my dad's car pull into the school to check me out. My mom had, in fact, passed away that morning.

I was told for years it was just a dream, that I was seeking attention. But I knew before anyone told me. And her visit helped me through the tough times that followed — a "no, this is real" I could hold onto, even after I filed it away.

Picture being raised in a Mississippi/Louisiana border town, missing my mom, wanting proof the connection was real. Kids do what kids do — I had a few scary experiences along the way, so I shut it all down.

Still, throughout my life, I'd dream of things here and there that I'd later watch happen. I'd get a gut check out of nowhere that I needed to check on someone close to me — and more often than not, there was a reason. I thought that was where it stopped.

The Turning Point

In my fifties, it cracked back open — during a long training run, of all places. What I saw stopped me in my tracks and sent me looking for answers.

I tried to explain it away — bad breathing, an overactive imagination from a lifetime of horror movies — but it didn't stick. Then came the conversation with my husband, and a moment neither of us will ever forget. (You can read that whole story — including his exact reaction — on the blog.)

Bottom line: that season is what led me to real teachers, real classes, and the discovery that I have intuitive abilities, the way I believe we all do at some level.

Then came a medical experience, and I found myself pulled toward Reiki. Truth is, I'd always steered clear of it before — it felt too woo-woo, like something reserved for people who were somehow "special," and that never felt like me. But this time was different. I found myself completely wrapped up in learning it, along with different modalities and levels. At first, I told myself it was just for self-healing — because no one needed to know, right? I could lose friends over this.

But today, I'm excited about what this energy does and how it flows — excited enough that I'm willing to change my life and my career for it. This isn't a hobby. It's big stuff, and I'm all in.  And, this is my story bow and all.
